Summary of Lesson: Students work in groups of two to prepare a "broadcast television" interview with a newsworthy politician.

Procedures :

Teacher Preparation Planning:

  1. Instruct students to group themselves in to couples
  2. Have the students choose one politician they both are interested in (their choice will depend on your unit of study)
  3. Once they have chosen their politician tell them one of them will be pretending to be a television news reporter and one of them will be pretending to be the politician. Have them decide on their roles
  4. Together they should research their chosen politician using the Biography Resource Center
  5. Have the groups use their research to develop questions and answers in each of their roles
  6. Once they have their questions and answers written instruct them to rehearse their interview
  7. Have students present their interviews for the class

Steps/Activities by student(s):

  1. Find a partner
  2. Choose one politician you both are interested in
  3. Decide on the role you each will play
  4. Research your chosen politician with your partner using the Biography Resource Center
  5. Use your research to develop questions and answers in each of your roles
  6. Rehearse your interview
  7. Present your interview for the class

Outcome: In groups of two students will choose a politician of interest and research that person. They will each assume the role of either the reporter or the politician. They will write a "mock" interview and present the interview to the class.

Related Activities: Students will write real interview questions and conduct interviews with their school politicians.
