Summary of Lesson: Students research an American author and nominate them for an award.

Focus Question: What award does your chosen author deserve and why?

Procedures :

Teacher Preparation Planning:

  1. Instruct students to choose an author to research. You can focus their choice to an author they have already studied, a contemporary author, or any other that meets the needs of your curriculum
  2. Have students access the Biography Resource Center and search for their author. Instruct students to focus their research on specific accomplishments of their author
  3. Instruct students to determine the most significant accomplishment(s) of their author's career/life and determine an appropriate award to nominate them for
  4. Instruct students to write and present a speech nominating their author for the award. Encourage them to be creative. For example, possible awards may include, "The most satirical author of the 20th Century" or, "The author most read by teenagers" or, ‘The author most loved by teachers." Assessment criterion should include:
    • Introduction of author, including background information
    • Three specific reasons why this author is being nominated for this award
    • Conclusion and summary of the author and award
    • Presenters enthusiasm and tone
    • Presenters knowledge of author
    • Time 2-3 minutes

Steps/Activities by student(s):

  1. Choose an author to research
  2. Access the Biography Resource Center and search for your author. Focus your research on specific accomplishments of your author
  3. Determine the most significant accomplishment(s) of your author's career/life and determine an appropriate award to nominate them for
  4. Write and present a speech nominating your author for the award

Outcome: Students will research an influential author. Their research will help them determine an award their author is worthy of receiving. They will write and present a speech nominating their author for the award.

Related Activities: Students write a speech through the voice of their author accepting the award.
