Title: Tracing the Impact of Historical Figures

Summary of Lesson:  Students will research a significant individual in history and create a photo journal of their experiences.

Focus Question: How did this individual think, feel and behave in their life?

Databases(s): Biography Resource Center

Steps / Activities by the teacher:

  1. Create a list of individuals for students to research. This list will vary based on the time period, place or era your students are studying
  2. Provide students with access to Gale Biography Resource Center database
  3. Copy directions and rubric for each student

Steps/Activities by student(s):

  1. Read and take notes on assigned individual
  2. Locate or create photos for journal
  3. Create journal using standards on rubric

Outcome:  Students will have an in-depth personal view of one significant individual in history and that person’s experiences.

Related Activities: Students may do a museum walk to view all journals or they may do a class presentation “in character” for the entire class.

  • Apply concepts such as role, status and social class in describing the connections and interactions of individuals, groups and institutions in society

  • At Level 1, the student is able to:
    • Identify significant events in the life of their topic person
  • At Level 2, the student is able to:
    • Consider the feelings and experiences of the topic person
  • At Level 3, the student is able to:
    • Combine research with critical thinking to create a research based photo journal that also includes speculation on personal feelings
