" …I just wanted to let you know that my students are really enjoying the large print books. Many of them actually PREFER them. We have 3 Large Print copies of (I can't remember the title), and I also have a class set of regular sized books of the same title. As we are reading the book, my students take turns with the Large Print. They love them. Many times they will ask me, Do you have this book in Large Print? And they are disappointed when I have to say, no. They Love the Large Print books, and as a result, they are reading more."

"I am happy to report, though, that they checked them out and read them as many times as the smaller print, smaller size counterparts. We've been very satisfied with the books. The comment I've heard most is, "It has big print, so it's really not that long!"

"…several students have enjoyed the books and commented how they are "easier" to read. "

"Students, not the ones I had originally planned for this program, are liking the bigger font! I thought only the kids I had planned for this program would need them, but I was wrong … We are a Title 1 school, many English as second language learners, and/or lower level students and surprisingly, they all like these books!

"Large print makes them more enticing because it looks easier and they'll pick a thicker book than usual because of it."

"…it is great to see so many lower reading kids getting interested in reading. I have to admit that I have even enjoyed a book or two from the selection. . . . Thanks for checking on me. I will keep you posted on any new events that I happen upon."

"So far the students who have started to read the Large Print books really love them -- even got a couple of students who didn't like to read before enjoying their reading!"

"Thorndike Large Print Books have been the key to opening up the world of reading for many of our previously reluctant readers. Students who used to go to great lengths to avoid reading are now excited about what books have to offer, and they are coming back to the library week after week to check out more of them. The large print format has made an unbelievable difference in our students’ ability to scan the words on the page and the interesting stories keep them coming back again and again. As our students’ reading skills have improved, their attitudes about reading and school in general have improved as well. My previously reluctant readers are now my most avid readers."

"The students are so excited… they beg for independent reading time! They read for 60 minutes straight when normal reading time was 40 minutes."

"Large print books have made a difference for my students because it allows them to have a greater comfort level with reading ‘chapter books’. The larger print helps them to feel more successful. The students in my class this year have gone from reading Dr. Seuss to Holes, Maniac Magee, and The Lion,The Witch and the Wardrobe in one year. I can’t wait to see what successes these books will help my students find in the next school year. I am working with my school librarian to order classroom sets of these books for the building so more kids can have this level of success."

"The students have enjoyed them [Thorndike Press Large Print books in the classroom]… encouraging each other to read quickly and finish books, [they] Love the 'contemporary' titles."

"We're a reading family, so when our son was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease and only able to read Large Print, it was particularly difficult. Books on tape are wonderful but they don’t fill the void of actually reading a good story. Large Print books have been around a long time for older people, but to find a good novel for a young person in Large print began to feel nearly impossible. The books that Thorndike Press published have truly made a difference in my son’s reading life. He can enjoy current novels as well as some of the classics that he missed reading when it became too difficult with regular print."

"Although I bought large print books to help the students with vision problems, all the students want them. It took me a moment to understand what was going on when I had so many requests for ‘books with big words’"

"As an illustrator, and now author, of children’s books, I have the opportunity to create something valuable for young readers. I have also been very fortunate to be the illustrator for the American version of the Harry Potter books. It is an exciting and fulfilling career for me as I witness children of all ages come together and get excited about reading. However, reading is not as easy for everyone. Just recently I had the opportunity to do a book signing in conjunction with Thorndike Press Large Print Books. It was there that I realized what an important role large print books play in serving those who struggle with reading. It was brought to my attention as I met with several librarians and teachers, all with stories of readers who fight hard to get through their books, from page to page. As a child I too struggled with reading. Just focusing on each word was a challenge I wasn’t always up to. I wish I could have had more options available, like large print books. I know they would have made a difference for me. I no longer think of large print books just for the elderly and those with failing vision, but rather a tool to help those who, for whatever reason, whatever age, struggle with reading. I would encourage all schools, libraries and book stores to offer a wider variety and a more bountiful selection of large print books, so that EVERYONE can experience the enjoyment of reading, and benefit from all it can bring."

"Many of my students have comprehensive and/or tracking issues. The large print books help the students immensely with both of these issues. Many of my students are reading a few years below grade level and though the larger print books may be at a higher level, the students don’t feel so put off by them because the print is reminiscent of readers from their time in elementary school. They are less intimidating if you will."

"I have long suspected that large print titles could be the key to helping some of our learning disabled students deal with their reading difficulties. The day that I received the Thorndike Press Large Print for Reluctant Readers catalog I knew that I had finally found the resource that I had been looking for. So far, we have been able to purchase fifty books, and we plan to continue to add to the collection. Our program is still in its infancy, but I am extremely pleased with the positive feedback that I have received from the teachers and the students who are using them... Not only do the students enjoy the stories, they are having phenomenal success in being able to read them. We have a number of students in our school who have learning disabilities. We are finding that the size of the print is perfectly suited to the way that many of these kids' brains are 'wired.' Their eyes simply scan a page differently than the rest of us, and the large print works for them."
